Cerebrospinal Fluid Biomarkers for use in Alzheimer’s Disease Research

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) collection for the purpose of scientific research remains a controversial topic albeit its routine use in medical practices around the world. The evidence for the benefit of CSF biomarkers in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) research and other neurodegenerative disorders, however, is too compelling to ignore. The measurement of the 2 key AD proteins, amyloid-beta and tau, continue to be the ‘gold standard’ in early AD diagnostics. With the high sensitivity and specificity of…See More

Cerebrospinal fluid interleukin-6 and glial fibrillary acidic protein levels are increased during initial neuromyelitis optica attacks

BackgroundThe current 2006 neuromyelitis optica (NMO) criteria are useful for diagnosing NMO, however these criteria seemed to be insufficient at early stage NMO. Hence, the development of diagnostic marker besides anti-aquaporin 4 antibody at early stage of NMO may be required. Our main aim of this study is to test the usefulness of measuring cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) interleukin (IL)-6 and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) concentrations as early diagnostic markers during initial NMO…See More

Treatment according to result of biomarkers?

Started by Fundación de Neurociencias Oct 3, 2012. 0 Replies

Should treatment also be based in the result of biomarkers? For instance, in a patient with suspected prodromal AD and treated with cholinesterase inhibitors, who later on gets results of CSF biomarkers and are negative. Should treatment be withhold?Continue
